D.A. Sherlin, a lifelong resident of Cleveland, Tennessee passed away peacefully at the age of 93, on Thursday, September 12, 2024, surrounded by his loving family in the local Tennessee State Veterans' Home. He was born June 13, 1931, to the late Robert and Maude Ogle Sherlin and was preceded in death by his wife Mary-Jo Rose Sherlin with 71 years of marriage. He was also preceded in death by his son, Donnie Allen; sister Dorothy "Dot" and (T.L.) Frazier, his brothers Jay Franklin Sherlin, Roy R. (Thelma) Sherlin, Mervin J. Sherlin, and Robert "Boog" Sherlin.
He is survived by his 94-year-old brother, Jim (Linda) Sherlin, sisters-in-law, Lois Sherlin and Betty Sherlin. Children: Deanna Chastain, Joel (Belinda) Sherlin. Grandchildren: Dustin (Theresa) Chastain, Duran (Trish) Sherlin, Keeonna (Aaron) Wood, Skylar (Tricia) Sherlin, Kassidy (Joel) Moody. Great-grandchildren: Aubrey, Camden, Eliza and Shaddix Sherlin; Palmer and Henley Jo Moody; Austin (Abbie), Chace, and Chloe Allen, Nikki Loftis, Ashlyn and Aayden Wood; Great-Great-Grandchild: Easton Allen; with many nieces and nephews.
D.A. was a lifelong member of South Cleveland Church of God where he served as an usher and was involved with the Prime Timers class. He was a veteran of the United States Army with a ranking as Corporal, serving in the Korean War where he was stationed in Germany. He retired after 40 years of service from Combustion Engineering, Chattanooga, TN. He enjoyed camping, road trips with family and friends where they visited every state in the continent, as well as Canada; drag racing in the 60's; four-wheeling jeeps where he served at one time in the 70's as president of the Bradley County Four-Wheel Drive Club; enjoyed guitar "picking," harmonica and dulcimer playing, with a fond love of southern gospel and bluegrass music. He was an avid fan of University of Tennessee football and Atlanta Braves baseball. Of all the many things he enjoyed, his family was most cherished and loved.
A graveside celebration of life remembrance is planned for Thursday, September 26 at 11am at the Chattanooga National Cemetery, with Pastor Edwin Lipsey and Ken Bowers, South Cleveland Church of God officiating. Family and friends are invited to attend.
The family wishes to express special thanks to the staff at the Tennessee State Veterans' Home for their exceptional care and love shown to D.A. during his time spent at the facility. Additionally, warm thanks to D.A.'s caregivers before entering the home - Jeanette Kinley and daughter Andrea, as well as Melanie Wilson. We are truly grateful.
