Chief Warrant Officer 3 (CW3) Matthew S. Jaggers, 38, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, July 22, 2021. CW3 Jaggers was born August 17, 1982, in Memphis, TN, to Dr. John S. Jaggers and Cynthia R. Jaggers. He attended Cleveland High School in Cleveland, TN, and graduated from The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Finance and Investments in 2008.
CW3 Jaggers enlisted in the Tennessee Army National Guard in 2003 as a Petroleum Supply Specialist and served with the 278th during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2005 as a Cavalry Scout. Following his combat tour, he was accepted into Warrant Officer Candidate School and graduated from the U.S. Army Flight School at Fort Rucker, Alabama, in 2011. He became a rated pilot in the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior Scout Helicopter and deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2014, where he flew in the last combat deployment of the Kiowa Warrior before its retirement in 2015.
Upon returning from his tour in Afghanistan, he transitioned to the UH-60 Blackhawk, assigned to a Tennessee Army National Guard MEDEVAC Detachment. While part of this unit, he participated in numerous rescues and state emergencies, including the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Gatlinburg Wildfires in 2016, Hurricane Irma/Maria Relief in the U.S. Virgin Islands in 2017, and Hurricane Florence Relief in North Carolina in 2018. His last deployment was in support of Operation Joint Guardian in Kosovo in 2019 as a MEDEVAC Standardization Instructor Pilot.
CW3 Jaggers was a full-time Standardization Instructor Pilot in the Tennessee Army National Guard at Army Aviation Support Facility #2, Louisville, TN. While achieving the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3, CW3 Jaggers held various positions throughout his career, including Safety Officer, Instructor Pilot, Instrument Examiner, Standardization Pilot, and Tactical Operations Officer.
He held multiple awards and decorations, including two Air Medals, two Army Commendation Medals, three Army Achievement Medals, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Iraq Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, the Combat Action Badge, and Senior Aviator Badge.
CW3 Jaggers is survived by his wife, Anna; daughter, Abigail Jaggers Bunton; brother, Zachary R. Jaggers; sister, Hannah Jaggers Morris; his parents and extended family.
A service honoring the life of CW3 Matthew S. Jaggers will be held at Broad Street United Methodist Church in Cleveland, TN, on Thursday, August 12, 2021, from 4-7 pm.
In accordance to the guidelines of Broad Street United Methodist Church, masks are required for unvaccinated and are highly recommended for the vaccinated.
A private graveside service with military honors will be held at Chattanooga National Cemetery
