Sue Hart Smith Mcmahan

May 22, 1932 — December 22, 2018

Mary “Sue” Hart Smith McMahan, 86, a resident of Cleveland, TN passed away on Saturday, December 22, 2018 at Life Care Center of Cleveland. She was born on May 22, 1932 in Chattanooga, TN a daughter of the late C. Ray Hart and Essie Lee Hart. Sue and her family relocated to McMinn County in 1938 where her father assumed the role of Dairy Farm Manager for the Mayfield Dairy until Sue graduated from McMinn County High School in 1950. She went on and received her Bachelor’s degree in education from Harding College in Searcy, Ark then received her Master’s degree from West Georgia College. Sue considered herself a lifelong educator working in Texas and Dalton Georgia school systems. She developed the Kindergarten program in the Whitfield County School system and was the first Middle School Guidance counselor in the Dalton Georgia school system. Sue was of the Church of Christ faith.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Harold McMahan, son A. Raye Smith and sister Marie H. Collins.

Sue leaves behind to cherish her memory one nephew W. Edwin Collins and his wife Stephanie of Plant City, FL, stepchildren – Carl McMahan and wife Judy, Hal McMahan and wife Kay, Colleen Wade and husband Michael of Ocala, FL, several grandchildren and great grandchildren, numerous other extended family members, church family and a host of special friends.

A celebration of her life is planned for Saturday, December 29, 2018 at 4:00 PM in the Cleveland chapel of Companion Funeral Home located at 2419 Georgetown Road in Cleveland, TN with Minister Ryan Ary officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2:00 PM until the 4:00 PM service.
The interment and committal service will take place on Sunday, December 30, 2018 at 2:00 PM in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Athens, TN.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial donations be made in Sue’s memory to the Whitfield Education Foundation grants in Early Childhood Education Applications. Those can be made at www.wefga.org.
