Steven Mark Henry

July 8, 1946 — September 1, 2021

Steven M. Henry passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on September 1, 2021.

Survived by Margaret “Peggy” Henry (wife), Jonathan Henry (son) and Dedria Henry (daughter-in-law), grandchildren Josiah and Raquel Henry. Siblings: Phyllis Schiel, Joann Bennett, Rick Henry, and Connie Burke. Born to and preceded in death by Richard and Jeanne Henry. Preceded in death by brother Bill Henry.

He grew up in San Jose, California, and joined the Navy after graduating high school in 1964. Served as a radarman on the USS Abnaki and a radioman in Vietnam for the River Patrol Boats. He was honorably discharged in 1970. He later served in the Army National Guard, Air Guard, and Navy Reserve.

Steven worked for Safeway while attending school and graduated from Bethany Bible College in 1982 with a B.A. in History. And then he went on to earn his teaching credential.

While attending Bethany Bible College, he met Peggy Desmond, his beloved bride to be. They married in 1980. The following year, their son Jonathan was born.

In 1985, the family of three moved to Susanville, California for what Steve referred to as “four winters”. While there, he tried his hand at substitute teaching and liked it. After their “four winters” they moved to a warmer climate in Butte County, where he attended Chico State University and earned a master’s degree in History. He continued to substitute teach and enjoyed interacting with the students especially upper grades where they understood sarcasm and his brand of humor.

He loved sharing war stories as well as stories from his childhood. He enjoyed being a vendor at the Chico Indoor Flea Market for many years, especially the camaraderie with his fellow vendors and interacting with other veterans.

Steve was a fighter, he served his country in Vietnam, was never afraid to take a stand for what he believed in and battled 2 types of cancer. Covid ultimately proved to be too strong for his tired body but it never defeated his spirit. To the very end he kept his wits and sense of humor and passionately shared personal testimonies of God’s perfect timing in his life with anyone who would listen. We take comfort in his strong faith and look forward to seeing him again one day with our Lord and Savior.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you send donations to ADRA or another disaster relief agency of your choice.
