Roy M. Glass

September 3, 1942 — March 8, 2019

Friday morning, March 8 2019 our Daddy, “Pop”, “Pap”, “Papaw”, brother, uncle and husband peacefully left this world to be with Jesus. He was met in heaven by his beloved Mom and Dad, as well as his pups, Fred and Sassy. You know him as Roy M. Glass and he came into this world feet first. Arriving with his legendary stubborn streak on September 3, 1942 to Carrie Maude and “Preacher” Earl Glass.
Roy grew up in East Athens and moved out on the hill past Mt. Verd Baptist Church. He graduated McMinn County High School where he kept teachers on their toes and developed an appreciation of automobiles. He often told stories of a ’59 Corvair, this would be his first automobile. He attended Carson Newman College and began his educational pursuit of an accounting degree. Roy was a “numbers” man. Being very matter of fact, he often explained life lessons in numbers.
Roy went on to serve his country and was a veteran of the United States Army National Guard. He began his accounting work at Asphalt Concepts where he worked diligently with Buddy Browder, who became a best friend and brother to Roy. He then was employed with Hutcheson, Henderson & McCullough Accounting in Chattanooga for several years before his last job as the accountant for the McMinn County Highway Department. He served under Randall Moss and recently retired in December 2017 after working with Commissioner Dan Evans, who was also a dear friend.
Given his hard work ethic, he also ran a personal booking service for 35 years. Roy had just gave up his last client, Steve Moses, the week before he passed. Steve was also a dear friend and Roy hated giving up that last account.
Roy loved and appreciated music. He spread the gospel through song all over TN, GA and KY. He sang with The Leamon Boys, The Gospelaires Quartet, The Gospel Way, The Happy Three and finally, The Singing Christians. It was with this last group, he found a family of support and bond that could not be broken. Without a doubt, Chuck West and Roy are singing with Jesus and having a good laugh that they “beat the rest of ‘em up there”.
Roy was the kind of man who always carried an ironed, white, cotton handkerchief. A gentleman to the deserving. Many strangers benefitted from his graceful offers of a ride home. He would, without hesitation, help a person on the side of the road if needed “because that could have been one of my girls”. He would make sure you had a full tank of gas and was always quick to pick up the tab after a meal. He enjoyed good food and taught his children and grandchildren the art of conversation over coffee and dessert.
Roy had an unrelenting sense of humor and bent toward practical jokes. He could hold court in a conversation and see all sides. He taught his children the value of craftsmanship and the importance of supporting local businesses. He was a believer in community and building lifelong relationships.
Roy leaves behind a host of friends and family, his daughters Lisa Glass Cox and Angela and Matt Rosoff. His bonus son, Jamie and Stefanie West and grandchildren, Colby Glass, Macy and Tanner Beaty, Ava and Marlon Rosoff, Amanda and Sgt. Dakota Means, Thomas West and great granddaughter Jamisyn Faye Means. His sister and brother-in-love Polly and Douglas Stamper and nephew and niece Douglas “Sam” Stamper, Carryl and Jeff Weaver.
However, his beloved wife Brenda Henderson West Glass was the hardest one for him to leave behind; he simply adored her. They enjoyed their last 17 years together and their families were so blessed when these two best friends became husband and wife. Brenda and the Henderson family accepted Roy and showed him unconditional love. He found great support from his new in-laws, Kathy and Donald Jennings and their children, Carrie and Scooter McKeehan and daughter Allie, Jodi and Jessica Jennings and their children, Jayci and Jocelynn. Don and Brenda Henderson and their sons, Zach and Ben as well as Keeliand Mark Raper.
The family invites you to a memorial service for Roy on Tuesday, March 12th at Freedom Baptist Church, located at 2207 Velma Road Athens, TN. The family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. with a service to immediately follow, led by Dan Evans. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations, in honor of Roy Glass and his pups Sassy & Fred, to be made to McMinn Regional Humane Society 3 Davidson Road Athens, TN 37303.
