Rosa Yolima Cardona De Mejia

August 30, 1928 — June 22, 2017

Rosa Yolima Cardona de Mejia of Covington, LA, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 22nd, after falling ill while visiting relatives in Cleveland, TN. She was born in Aguadas, Departamento de Caldas, Colombia on August 30, 1928 to parents Carmen Tulia Arcila Echandia and Jose Maria Cardona Garcia. She, her husband and their children emigrated to the United States in April of 1962. She was a devout Catholic attending church at St. Dominic in Lakeview, and more recently Most Holy Trinity in Covington. She earned an Associate's Degree in Accounting and worked in the actuarial department of PanAmerican Life Insurance. She called New Orleans home until 2005 when Hurricane Katrina struck. She relocated to Longmont, CO, and lived among three of her children. She was finally able to return to the New Orleans area which she loved dearly and settled in Covington where two of her children reside.
Yolima, or Moli as she was affectionately known, was an avid quilter, seamstress, artist, amazing cook and mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She enjoyed working with the Food Bank , feeding the homeless and helping fellow Katrina survivors. She made quilts for newborns, the elderly and veterans coming home from overseas. She loved traveling, painting landscapes, being in nature surrounded by flowers, listening to birds, enjoying time spent with family, and learning about the wonders of the Northern Lights.
She is survived by husband, Dorance Mejia Peñalosa, her children: Robert (Janine Geauthreaux); their children Nicholas and Isabella; Catalina Mejia (Tom C. Flanagan); Susana Mejia (James Keith Bagley); Theresa Mejia (partner Steve Counas); and Hector Mejia (partner Veronica Sharp). Moli was the oldest of nine children. She is survived by her siblings: Esneda Fasel; Ramiro, Olivia and Nancy Cardona; Luz Danelia Giraldo (Javier); many nieces and nephews, and her faithful canine companion, Latte. She was preceded in death by three brothers: Oscar, Hector and Octavio.
She will be sorely missed by all who knew her well and even by those who were only acquaintances. Her love of life and joy of everything surrounding her was contagious. She spread that love around to everyone she met.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday morning, June 27, 2017 from 10:00am until 11:00am at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, located at 501 Holy Trinity Drive, Covington, LA 70433.
A funeral mass will be held at 11:00am at the church.
Rosa will be laid to rest following the mass in the Abita Springs Cemetery.
