Phil Brown

Phil Brown of Cleveland, TN, 74, passed away in his home on April 16, 2021 surrounded by family. He was a beloved husband, dad, grandpa, brother and friend. Phil lived in Cleveland, TN for almost 17 years and was quite active in several local charities. Phil spent countless hours volunteering for the community and played a key role in building the new Civitan Inclusive Playground and facilities. Phil also had a leadership role in the St. Therese of Lisieux Three Kings Feast. He eagerly volunteered for Knights of Columbus projects.

Phillip Wayne Brown was born on May 12, 1946 in Hutchinson, KS. It was Mother’s Day that year, and his family heard the comment numerous times that it was the best Mother’s Day present his mom could have received. Phil’s parents were Henry S. Brown and Ella Balzer Brown. He grew up near Partridge, KS on a dairy farm.
Phil graduated from Kansas State University in 1969 with a degree in Chemistry. For three summers during college he worked for the forest service in Oregon, and he often referred to this as his favorite job. After graduating from college, he enlisted in the Army and served from 1969 to 1972. Phil is a Vietnam Veteran.
Phil married Joan Thieme on April 5, 1975 in Zenda, KS. Phil and Joan resided in Hutchinson, KS; Fort Wayne, IN; El Dorado, AR; and Morristown, TN before moving to Cleveland. Phil spent his career as an analytical chemist in the quality control field. Phil was active in ASQ, ACS, Civitan, Knights of Columbus, and the St. Therese Choir. He was a member of St. Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church.
Phil is survived by his wife of 46 years, Joan Thieme Brown; children Jenny (Waylon) Greene, Amy (Jason) Greer, Tim (Paige) Brown; and 8 grandchildren, Madison, Savannah, and Isaiah Greene, Audrey and Lucas Greer, and Hudson, Willow, and Finley Brown. Phil is also survived by his aunt, Loel Balzer; brother, Charles Brown; sister, Peggy MacArthur; several brothers and sisters –in-law and dozens of nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass will be held at 2:00 pm at St. Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church in Cleveland, TN. Visitation will be at the church at 1:00. A live stream option will be available on St. Therese YouTube site. Memorial donations may be made to the Cleveland Civitan Club, Box 524, Cleveland, TN 37364 or St. Therese Knights of Columbus Charities Fund, Council 4572.
