Nanlyn Schlatterer

August 8, 1955 — April 8, 2021

Nan, daughter, sister and friend to many, departed this life on April 8 at the young age of 65, near her home in Cleveland, Tennessee after a long battle with cancer. She had the support of many friends, too numerous to name. The overwhelming love and support of Dee Miller, Carl Dietz and David Burns gave Nan the freedom and peace to move to the light of her new life. She was born on August 8, 1955 in Wausau, Wisconsin to William and Nancy Schlatterer.

Although she did not have any children of her own, she adopted her friend’s children and grandchildren as her own. She loved to play, rock hunt and read to her little friends. If there were kids around, they were following Nan! She loved the outdoors and was an avid rockhound. She could frequently be seen hunched over staring at the ground looking for that next cool friendship rock or fossil she was so good at spotting. She enjoyed working in her garden and planted countless bulbs around her house every year. Nan was a devoted Green Bay Packers fan and enjoyed getting together with her “Packer Bar” friends to watch the game whenever she could.

Nan graduated from MSU in Springfield, MO in 1989 and went on to have a 31 year career with the United States Forest Service, retiring in December 2019. Nan loved her job as a Civil Engineering Technician on the Cherokee National Forest. She helped oversee road maintenance on the Ocoee and Tellico Ranger Districts. She loved the smell of fresh asphalt and was affectionately known as the “gravel queen” and “Nanner”. She was also the Forest sign coordinator, which was one of her favorite duties. Nan worked on engineering projects on Forests in Georgia, Texas, and Mississippi. She worked many years as a fire dispatcher on the Cherokee as well as on other Forests around the country. Nan’s former supervisor describes Nan as a devoted, conscientious, valuable, and hard-working employee. She greatly enjoyed working with her coworkers and contractors over the years.

She is survived by her brother Jeff Schlatterer and wife Mary, niece Jolene Hanousek, special friends David Burns, Mary Collins, Dee Miller, Janice Oldenburg, Carl Deitz, Jane Adler, and many other friends and cousins. She is preceded in death by her mother, grandparents, Uncle Jim, longtime companion Wendell Baltimore and special friend Martha Chiappetti. Family and friends thank
her Hearth Hospice nurse Katy and Hearth Hospice for their devoted care.

Our loyal, loving, generous friend will be greatly missed by so many.

Nan had a great affection for animals and especially cats, so please make a contribution to the Ark of Cleveland

Memorial services will be held in Tennessee, Missouri and Wisconsin, dates to be determined.
