Molly Laura Morton Corn

October 3, 1928 — January 2, 2017

Molly Laura Morton Corn was received into the loving arms of her Savior on January 2nd, 2017. She passed peacefully at her home surrounded by her family.

She is reunited now with her daughter, Laura Taylor Corn Bishop, her four babies lost prematurely, and her husband James Franklin Corn, Jr., as well as her mother Gussie Morton, her father Bert Morton, and her sister Merle Duke. She is survived by many beloved children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren: daughter Donna Corn Ziebell, son Jim Corn and fiancée Leslie Johnston; grandchildren Jay Ziebell, Molly and Jonathan Jackson, Natalie and Ryan Kendrick, James Ward Corn, Dane and Courtney Johnston, Dylan Johnston, and Sam Bishop; great-granddaughters Ella Jane Jackson and Adeline Taylor Jackson, as well as a new Kendrick great-granddaughter due in March; her niece Sally Stephenson, many other extended family members, and her loving goddaughter Janey Patten.

Molly’s first and fiercest love was always her family, and she was proud to be called “Mammy.” She was also a true and loyal friend. She will always be remembered by those who knew her for her feisty wit, quick sense of humor, her joy of life, and her striking beauty.

She loved her church, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, where she faithfully attended from the age of 18 and enjoyed being one of the oldest living members. She served on the vestry multiple times and was the first female senior warden of the vestry in 1980. She served in many capacities in the church including Altar Guild for over 25 years, serving as chairman for 10 of those years. She was a member of the ECW, and she contributed her opinions freely on the comings and goings of the church for the 70 years she was a member.

Molly traveled the world with her family and friends throughout her life, and we all enjoyed hearing her stories of fun and adventure. She was also an avid bridge player and enjoyed golf into her early 80s. She was a member of the Cleveland Country Club, a founding member of the Cleveland-Athens Cotillion where she served on the board many times, a member of the original Cleveland Garden Club, and a member of the DAR and the UDC.

In her later years, her greatest joy was spending time with her two great-grandchildren, Ella Jane and Adeline Jackson, whom she called the “funniest and smartest humans who ever lived.” As Ella Jane said on the morning of her passing, “Mammy now lives in our hearts.”

A memorial service is planned for Monday, January 9th, 2017 at 2:00 PM in the sanctuary of St. Luke's Episcopal Church located at 320 Broad Street NW in Cleveland, TN with The Rev. Joel W. Huffstetler officiating. Interment will follow in the church's memorial garden. The family will receive friends on Monday afternoon from 12:00 noon until the 2:00 PM service time in the Parish Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in her memory to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church or to the Patten Scholarship fund at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.
You are encouraged to share a memory of Molly and/or your personal condolences with her family by visiting her memorial web page and guestbook at www.companionfunerals.com.
