Johnny Lovell Maupin

Johnny Lovell Maupin, 91, of Cleveland, TN passed away on January 29, 2023. She was born on May 13, 1931 in Birchwood, TN to the late Holman and Cecil Lovell. She graduated from Bradley High School, where she served as the manager of the Bradley Bearettes basketball team. Johnny retired after 35 years at South Central Bell, starting as a telephone operator and finishing her career as a supervisor. She was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church for 80 years and during her time there she learned to play the piano as a teenager and served as accompanist at the church for many years. Johnny loved to travel the world and her travels took her to Hawaii on nine occasions. She was a fan of Elvis Presley and avid reader of all genres of books. Above all things, Johnny’s faith in the Lord remained at the forefront of everything she did. She was dearly loved and will forever be remembered by her generous spirit and caring for those around her.


In addition to her mother and father, she’s preceded in death by her son, George Maupin; husband James Maupin; siblings: Joan Lovell Still, Jess Lovell, and Connie Lovell Clark. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her son Tom Maupin and his wife, Lesa of Franklin, TN; daughter Betsy Gentry and her husband Bryan, whom Johnny said, “Was the best thing Betsy got from East Tennessee State University.”; sister Wanda Lovell Wilkey, who was her “Rock.”; sister-in-law and friend of 75 years, Joyce Maupin; sister-in-law Carole Lovell; brother-in-law Morris Clark; grandchildren: Brooke Gentry Snyder (Chris), John Maupin (Jayne), Julie Maupin, Jeffrey Maupin (Mitzi); great grandchildren: Zoie, Jabari, Addie, Jackson, Annie, Peyton, Harrison, and Sawyer; special nieces Adelia Clark Hall and Greta Clark Frazier; extra special nephew Lukas Hall and extra special niece Lauren Jean Hall. In addition to these, she leaves behind numerous additional nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.


Johnny’s family will receive friends from 12pm until 2pm on Wednesday February 1, 2023 at Hopewell Baptist Church. A celebration of life service will follow at 2pm and burial to follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Jonathan Kyle and Rev. Steve Huff will be officiating. Pallbeares will be: John Maupin, Jeffrey Maupin, Chris Snyder, Lukas Hall, David Lovell, Justin Wilkey and Jason Bean.


In lieu of flowers, Johnny’s family requests that donations be made to the Hopewell Baptist Cemetery Fund.
