James Morton Thomasson Jr.

June 15, 1934 — September 11, 2021

James Morton Thomasson, Jr. passed away September 11, 2021 at the age of 87. Born on June 15, 1934 in Nashville, Tennessee, Mort graduated from East Nashville High School in 1952. He studied at various other banking schools including the School of Banking of the South at LSU, School for Bank Administration, University of Wisconsin and Southern Trust School at Birmingham Southern University. He started his banking career with the Federal Reserve Bank in Nashville in 1953 and ended as the President and Vice Chairman of the Board for Sweetwater Valley Bank, from which he retired in 1995. He was member of the First United Methodist Sweetwater Choir and a Sunday School teacher for over 40 years. He is a past treasurer of the Sweetwater Kiwanis Club, Past Chairman of the Sweetwater School System and a Past Trustee of the Sweetwater Library Foundation.

Mort was proceeded in death by his parents Eileen Thomasson & James Morton Thomasson, Sr., his loving wife of 64 years, Helen Vandercook Thomasson, son Stephen Mark Thomasson, brothers Charles Wayne Thomasson, Kerry Randall Thomasson.

He is survived by his son, Michael Glenn Thomasson and wife Lisa, Brother, Joseph A. (Tony) Thomasson (Fran), Sisters, Gloria Sue Cox (Randy) and Melanie Jill McClain, as well as his Grandchildren, Jessica Michelle Price (Aaron), Katlyn Nicole Lawson (Cory), Rachel Elizabeth Thomasson and Abigail Grace Music (Carter) and Great Grandson Graham Thomas Music; daughter in law Amy Seymour Thomasson. In addition to these, he leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members and friends.

A graveside service for family and close friends will be held at 2pm on Sunday September 19, 2021 at Sweetwater Memorial Gardens. Rev. Brad Scott will be officiating the committal service. Memorials may be sent to the Sweetwater First United Methodist Choir or other ministries.
