James A. "Jim" Henderson

June 13, 1932 — June 29, 2017

James A. Henderson, 85, of Cleveland, TN passed away at home on June 29, 2017. He was born in Jonesville, VA on June 13, 1932 to the late Gus and Pattie Henderson. While in high school, Jim excelled in basketball, baseball, and track. He graduated from Hiwassee College in 1952. While he was there he played football and basketball. He loved sports of all kinds and playing most of them came easily to him. Jim enlisted in the US Army in 1954 during the Korean Conflict. He spent two years as a Quartermaster for his company and attained the rank of Sargent. He married Jean Street, the love of his life, on March 29, 1953 and they celebrated 64 wonderful years together raising their three sons and traveling to all 50 states, most all the Canadian Provinces, Mexico, and numerous other countries. Jim coached little league baseball several years and served as Cub Scout Master at Wesley Memorial UMC. He loved playing tennis and a good game of Rook. He was a tremendous man of faith and loved his church, Wesley UMC, where he served on several boards and committees, and was actively involved in all its ministries. Jim was chair of the building committee that gave oversight to the construction of the spacious Family Life Center that includes Founders Hall, Nursery, Pre-School area, kitchen, and atrium. He loved being with his boys and lending a hand to whatever they were doing. When they were young he especially enjoyed the many camping trips the family made to Cades Cove and Myrtle Beach. He was kind, gentle, generous husband, dad, granddad, and friend. He was loved by all and will be missed by many. He was employed at Bowater for 38 years, working most of those in the Electrical Dept. He retired in 1995.
In addition to his mother and father, Jim is preceded in death by one son, David Henderson and his sisters Betty Abbott and Ruth Russell.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his beloved wife Jean Henderson; sons Mike Henderson (Judy) and Tim Henderson (Renee); grandchildren: James Andrew Henderson, Joe David Henderson, Cole Henderson, Conner Henderson, and Chase Henderson; great grandchildren: Jack Henderson and Alex Henderson. In addition to these, Jim leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members and friends.
