Gaynelle "Nell" Clayton

July 6, 1944 — February 14, 2020

Gaynelle “Nell” Clayton, 75, a lifelong resident of Athens, TN passed away on Friday, February 14, 2020 at Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga, TN in peace after a lengthy illness. She was a Christian and a member of North Athens Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher for many years. Nell was a member of the graduating class of 1963 McMinn County High School and always loved watching and listening to Cherokee football. Nell retired from Walmart of Athens after working at Grace Peek Florist for many years. She was a member of the McMinn County Senior Center where she loved to play bingo and chat with friends. She was a lifelong Tennessee Volunteer fan as she loved and watched every sport and was quick to let everyone know that her blood was orange while wearing something orange every day. She went to her reward on her third favorite day of the year, “Valentine’s Day” as she loved to trade cards with her friends and loved ones.
She is preceded in death by her parents Willie Payne Clayton and Charles Hershel Clayton, sister Laura Fay Clayton Miller, grandparents Nelle & George Payne and Stella & General Clayton and several aunts and uncles.
Nell leaves behind to cherish her memory her brother and sister in law Bill & Shurra Clayton of Decatur, TN, nephew William Corey Clayton also of Decatur, two aunts Betty Casper and Jean Lower, one uncle Lee Payne and her many friends at the McMinn County Senior Center along with anyone that knew her.
She was laid to rest next to parents in the McMahan Calvary Cemetery in a private family ceremony. Honorary pallbearers were Members of the McMinn County Senior Center and anyone who knew her.
A celebration of life service is planned for Thursday, February 20, 2020 at 9:30 AM at the Athens Senior Center located at 205 McMinn Avenue in Athens, TN.
In lieu of flowers, either do something kind for another person or make donations to Tennessee Baptist Children’s Home at 6623 Lee Highway, Chattanooga, TN 37421 in memory of Gaynelle Clayton.
