Fred Wood

Fred Wood,77 passed away after a lengthy illness on Tuesday, November 1, 2022.

He was born on March 6,1945 in Chattanooga, Tennessee and moved to

Cleveland, Tennessee after getting out of graduate school to work at Cleveland

State Community College. He was an Associate Professor of English and the last

eight years was the Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences. He retired after 43

years of service to the college. In May of this year Cleveland State Community

College dedicated the children’s alcove in the library, now referred to as the

Enchanted Woods, to he and his wife, Suzanne. Fred also played the organ and

directed the choir at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Cleveland, Tennessee followed

by being the organist and director of the choir at St. Martin’s of Tours,

Chattanooga, Tennessee for a total of 30 years.


Fred had many talents. He played the piano and the pipe organ, directed choirs,

excelled at teaching, was a superb cook, and had a wonderful sense of humor. He

loved to read books on literature especially William Faulkner, Flannery O’Connor,

and C. S. Lewis, Episcopal church history and liturgy, Mythology, and the Civil War.

He was an avid listener of classical music Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart were

some of his favorites. Watching Leonard Bernstein conduct or listening to his

music was also a favorite as well as going to the symphony and opera.

He was preceded in death by father, Willard Wood, Sr. and mother, Margaret

Cushman Wood.


Fred loved his family and leaves behind his wife of 26 years, Suzanne Appling

Wood and their cat, Shadow. As well as his brother, Willard Wood, Jr. (Margaret)

their children Allison Wood Harper and Lee Wood, his sister Nancye Hughes

(Carl), their children Christie Kennedy (Donnie), Misty Mathews and daughter

Katelyn, brother-in-law, Jay Appling (Donna) and son, Tanner, as well as many

favorite cousins and very special friend of the family, Jean Whaley.
