Fred Cody Nicholson died unexpectedly at Memorial Hospital on 5/21/2020 in Chattanooga, TN at the age of 88 years old.
Fred is survived by his loving and dedicated wife Betty Hathcock Nicholson; his children, Doug Nicholson of Fredericksburg, TX, and Debbie Nicholson Millard of Cleveland, TN; his siblings, Helen Nicholson Cummings of Kannapolis, NC, and Edith Nicholson Cruse of China Grove, NC; his 9 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents Robert Nicholson and Beulah Hall Nicholson of China Grove, NC, his siblings Almetia Nicholson Brooks of China Grove, NC, and David Nicholson of Austin, TX, his daughter Melanie Nicholson Hindman of Cleveland, TN; and grandson Stevie Nicholson.
Fred was born on October 9, 1931 in Lexington, NC to Robert and Beulah Nicholson. He served in the United States Air Force as a Flight Engineer from 1949 – 1953. Serving most of his time in Anchorage, Alaska and finishing his service at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, DC. He married his lovely bride in Washington, DC in 1953. They were married for over 67 years. He retired from Jackson Manufacturing in 1997 after performing various functions including, Plant Manager and Product Development. He served as the first Branch President for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Cleveland, TN from 1976 – 1981. He served in various leadership positions in the church throughout his life.
Fred was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was a soft-spoken man that lead by example of working hard and dedication to living the gospel of Jesus Christ. He was a great listener that provided wise counsel and generosity to those in need. He had a passion for all things golf. He won many accolades throughout his life as an amateur golfer. He could be found on local golf courses playing or freely tutoring others wanting to learn the craft. He was an active and faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
In an abundance of caution due to COVID-19, a grave side funeral will be held for immediate family only. Once all social restrictions are lifted and deemed safe for large gatherings, a memorial will be held in his honor.
