Fannie Lou Monroe

June 16, 1935 — January 24, 2019

Fannie Lou Witt Monroe, 83, long-time resident of Niota, TN and later Cleveland, TN passed away at her home on January 24, 2019. The matriarch of the family. She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was smart, savvy, and feisty. In her youth, she was a star basketball player. She worked as an optician until she retired to take care of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She attended every event of theirs no matter where. She loved God and her family. She attended North Cleveland Baptist Church where she very much enjoyed her ladies class. She adopted friends and neighbors as family too. She was a Mamaw to so many and she will be greatly missed.
Fannie is preceded in death by her loving husband Charles Clay Monroe; parents Henry Witt and Lydia Wilson Witt; brothers Ray Witt, Jim Witt, Maynard Witt, Thomas Bud Witt and Tommy Beecher Leslie; Sisters Dean Smith and Mamie Monroe.
Left behind to cherish her memory is her son Charles Craig (Cathy) Monroe of Athens, TN; Daughters Karen Monroe (Jeff) Ferguson of Cleveland, TN; sister Eunice McAlister of Clinton, TN; grandchildren Dusty (Courtney)Ferguson, Dr. Cortney (Ty) Bramlett of Cleveland, TN; great grandchildren Luke and Mattie Waycaster, and soon to be Fletcher Witt Ferguson, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Donations can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in her honor.
The family will receive friends on Monday, January 28, 2019 from 11:00am until 12:00pm at Companion Funeral Home in Athens, TN located at 400 S. White St. Athens, TN 37303. A graveside service will follow the visitation at 12:00pm at the New Zion Baptist Church Cemetery (393 Co Rd 616, Athens, TN 37303) with Pastor Phil Griffin officiating.
