David Byon Thomas Sr.

March 23, 1939 — April 18, 2023

David Byon Thomas Sr., a loving, selfless, and handy man, passed away on April 18, 2023, in Cleveland, Tennessee. Born on March 23, 1939, in Harlon County, Kentucky, David was the son of the late Alonzo Frank and Hattie Mae Thomas.


David is survived by his devoted wife of 43 years, Marilyn Thomas; his children, David Thomas Jr. and Traci Reddish; his stepchildren, Rodney Bowen, Eric Kowal, and Bradley Kowal; his grandchildren, Cassidy, Brennan, Gabrielle, Cierra, Eric John, Isabella, Caiden, Abigail, Miranda, David III, of the home, Olivia, and Sammy; his beloved nieces, nephews, Sandra (Dennis) McReynolds, Roger (Cindy) Crouse, Larry (Lisa) Crouse, Michael (Cathy) Crouse; his much loved sister in law, Kathy Gallo; and a special friend that was a great help and companion during a difficult time, Frankie Clement. In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his sister, Elsie Crouse.


David proudly served his country for 20 years in the United States Navy, where he acquired an unwavering work ethic and a strong sense of duty. After his time in the military, David continued his service to his country by working in civil service for 15 years. As a retired veteran, David's dedication to his work and his country was evident in every aspect of his life.


In his free time, David enjoyed playing golf, fixing things, and most importantly, spending time with his family and friends. He was known for his selflessness, always putting the needs of others before his own. David's loving nature and his ability to make everyone around him feel special will be deeply missed by all who knew him.


David's life was marked by his unwavering love and commitment to his family. He was a devoted husband to Marilyn, a loving father to his children and stepchildren, and a doting grandfather to his many grandchildren. David's family was his pride and joy, and he never missed an opportunity to show them how much they meant to him.


David was also a dedicated member of the Farmland Community Church.


The family would like to extend a special thank you to Hearth Hospice for their gentle care of David.


In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to the Gideons.


A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Sunday, April 23, 2023, at Farmland Community Church at 3:00 pm with Pastor Raymond “Chip” Hammonds, and Associate Pastor Frankie Clement officiating. The family will be receiving friends from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm prior to the service. A Graveside service will follow at Flint Springs Cemetery in Cleveland, Tennessee.
