Clyde "Peedab" Mathews

October 10, 1941 — November 23, 2018

Clyde Edward (PeeDab) Mathews, age 77, entered this earth on October 10, 1941, and departed for heaven on November 23, 2018 after a 5-year courageous battle with oral squamous cell cancer. If your wondering if he was a smoker, yes, but he had quit smoking over 45 years ago.
He was the son of the late Lester and Mary Lee Scoggins Mathews. His brothers and sisters are Doug Mathews, Howard (Joy) Mathews, Ann (Charles) Williams, Nancy Mathews and the late Darrell (Mary) Mathews. His sister in-laws are Carol Corum (the late Darvin Mathews and the late Eddie Corum) and Gail (Billy) Walker.
He was married to his loving wife, Pam for 50 years. He had 2 daughters, for whom he referred to as the “best girls in the world,” Phaedra (Tom) Walker and Wendi (Greg) Day and they affectionately called him “PA.” His grandchildren are Makayla (Ryan) Shealy, Ethan (Taylor) Walker, Adrienne Walker, Corbin Day and Caleb Day. He was a resident of Bradley County his entire life. He was a hard worker, even as a child, working for his father picking strawberries and selling strawberry plants. He enjoyed fur trapping, a skill learned from his father. Each of his five grandchildren have a fur hat that was made from fur he trapped. He was retired from Bendix (Allied-Signal) with over 30 years’ service. While at Bendix he started the famous fishing club “Nighthawk Doo-Lollies.” He loved fishing with his fishing buddy, the late Roy Lewis. They can now go fishing again.
He was also an active member of the community. He served on the Prospect Elementary PTO while his daughters were in elementary school. He was a member of the Westside and McDonald Ruritan clubs for many years. He also served on the Bradley County School Board and was an avid Republican. He was a member of Mt Olive Church of God for over 40 years during which time he served as director of the mid-week training in the old church. He was fond of gardening, flowers and vegetables. He had a vegetable garden this year that he tended to every day and shared the bounty with family and friends. He raised beautiful angel trumpet plants this summer. He enjoyed watching birds feed from feeders outside his window, some of which he made.
He loved going to yard sales and auctions. He was an avid collector of junk. He also loved going to the Antique Parlor to restock his booth and sell his treasures. He enjoyed wood working, having built many rustic items, birdhouses, tables and potting tables. One of his favorite sayings was “Bare down on it boy!”. Pa, we will bare down on it until our time comes to be with you in heaven.
The family will receive family and friends on Sunday, November 25,2018 at 2pm-4pm at Mt Olive Church of God. A Celebration of Life service will be held immediately following at 4pm at Mt Olive Church of God, with Reverend Gary Sears officiating. Interment will follow the service at Mt Olive Cemetery.
Pall bearers were chosen by PeeDab and are Bud Swallows, Mike Henry, Mike Crittenden, Charlie Gammill, Roy Rollins and Dan Waters. Honorary pallbearer is Fro Daddy.
The family would like to extend special thanks to L’Tonya Simpson. She was his friend and Hospice nurse during his battle. Also special thanks to Hospice of Chattanooga, Dr Dennis Thompson, primary care, and Dr Peter Hunt, surgeon.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Chattanooga Cleveland Division.
