Charles N. Haney

August 4, 1932 — April 28, 2023

On April 28th, 2023, Maj. Charles N. Haney, of Cleveland, TN, loving husband of Jo Haney of 65 years, and faithful father of Chris, Craig (Cary), and Elizabeth, joined the choir of angels surrounded by his family. Charles (also known as Dad, Charlie and Chuck) was born in Ferguson, Kentucky, on August 04, 1932, to Elfreda and Vernando Haney and had six siblings. He attended Ferguson High School and Cumberland Junior College in Kentucky, where he received a basketball scholarship. Charles enlisted in the United State Air Force (USAF) in 1952 and retired as a major after 20 years of service.

As a pilot, he flew numerous aircraft, including the C-130. His assignments included missions to Laos, support missions for NASA, and many others throughout Europe and Asia. One of his more memorable missions was serving on the team that recovered John Glenn’s capsule when he returned from space in 1962. He had the opportunity to meet Glenn and fellow astronauts Scott Carpenter and Alan Shepard afterwards. Charles received his BS in Mathematics and MEd Degree in Aerospace Education from Middle Tennessee State University. After completing his teaching degree, he moved with his family to Cleveland in 1974 to begin his teaching career at Bradley High School.

He taught Physical Science, Math, and Aerospace for over 15 years. As many know, Charles lived a life of service and commitment beyond the USAF, including the Boy Scouts of America, Broad Street United Methodist Church, and Habitat for Humanity. Charles and Jo loved traveling abroad and in the States. They took their motorhome to many states across the country for vacation or to join fellow Habitat volunteers for building projects outside of Cleveland. He even took his Habitat work internationally, including Newfoundland (where he lived at one point) as well as New Zealand. When asked what the most important thing a person can do is, his response was “do what you say you are going to do” and he did exactly that as many can attest. In his celestial home, Charles will continue to wear one of his many hats, jangle the change in his pockets, and fix whatever is needed in heaven; and we’ll await the time when we walk with him again. He is remembered by his wife, Jo, his children, Craig’s wife, Cary, his grandchildren, Callie and Charlie, along with his sister, Marsha, and numerous family members in Kentucky, Florida, and Oklahoma.

In lieu of cards or flowers, the family would ask that you join us and Habitat for Humanity in Cleveland in raising support for a house in his honor. We want to continue the legacy he so faithfully “built” for years to come. To donate: https://habitatofcleveland.org/chuck-haney.

You are invited to share a personal memory of Charles or your condolences with his family at his online memorial located at www.companionfunerals.com. Companion Funeral Home of Cleveland and the Cody family are honored to assist the family with these arrangements.
