Bertha Janet Monette Collins

January 29, 1946 — October 11, 2022

Bertha Collins of Chattanooga passed away peacefully at home on October 11, 2022. She was preceded in death by her mother Dora Susman Monette, father Samuel Monette, sister Goldie S. Zinaman, and nephew, Alan Zinaman. Bertha is survived by nieces, Sharon Z. Smallman (Don) of Arizona and Sheila Z. Haynes (Greg) of Chattanooga.


Bertha taught English at Lookout Valley Jr. High and moved up to Lookout Valley Middle/High School in 1972 after the high school was completed. She spent her entire 37 years of teaching in Lookout Valley. During that time, she touched the lives of many students and made a huge impact on them. After retirement, she returned to Lookout Valley as an Instructional Coach, helping teachers to do what she loved most. Recognized several times for her teaching and devotion to education, Bertha was a loyal friend, co-worker, and educator.


Bertha was passionate about everything she pursued, bowling, teaching, learning, the Tennessee Volunteers, casinos, reading, and traveling with friends and family. She made many friends along her journey and will be remembered for many years to come.


A Memorial Service will be held on November 15, 2022, 6:00 p.m. at Mizpah Congregation, 923 McCallie Avenue. Visitation will be prior to the celebration beginning at 5:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial contributions to: Chattanooga Ronald McDonald House or Chattanooga Adoration Hospice.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Companion Funeral Home, Cleveland, Tennessee.
